4 Steps to Certification

Application

The first step to board certification is submission of a complete application. There are minimum standards of all applicants. For a detailed review of those standards, please refer to the ABN Applicant Handbook.

Multiple Choice Examination

The Multiple Choice Examination is required for all applicants. The Multiple Choice Examination consists of 150 questions comprising General Knowledge in the field of Neuropsychology. Exams will be administered on an individual basis via remote proctoring platform beginning in Summer 2020. Information will be provided from the written exam coordinator. You will have 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the exam.

Work Samples

Those Applicants successfully completing the Application screening process and passing the Written Examination will then be asked to submit two Work Samples (or the alternatives as noted in the Handbook) that will be reviewed by a panel of examiner/reviewers. The applicant is strongly encouraged to contact the Work Sample Coordinator (contact links here) who will provide information on how to forward Work Samples. For additional information, see the Applicant Handbook.

Oral Examination

Those Applicants successfully completing the Application screening process, passing the Written Examination and Work Samples may then schedule the Oral Examination. The oral examination is the final step towards board certification with the ABN and is administered by two trained ABN examiners in the areas of (1) work style and (2) ethics and professional standards. The purpose of the oral examination is to critically evaluate the candidate’s current knowledge base and ability to conceptualize cases and apply ethical principles. The applicant is strongly encouraged to contact the Oral Examination Coordinator (contact links here) to obtain information about scheduling the oral exam. For additional information, see the Applicant Handbook.
